Overview
Hakone Hotel(箱根ホテル) is a refined lakeside hotel in the Lake Ashi area.
From the garden, the building looks almost like a art museum, with a quiet and refined lakeside presence.

When my husband and I visit this part of Hakone, we often stop here for lunch because the food is excellent, the location is convenient, and the atmosphere feels calm and elegant.
This is not a flashy resort.
It feels more like a quiet, high-class hotel for adults who want to enjoy Lake Ashi slowly.
With its beautiful lakefront location, polished dining, and peaceful interiors, Hakone Hotel is a place I would seriously consider for a relaxing stay by Lake Ashi.

Lakefront Garden and Relaxing Spaces
One of the best parts of staying at Hakone Hotel is the beautiful lakefront garden.
Guests can relax on the terrace sofas overlooking Lake Ashi or gently sway in a hammock while enjoying the peaceful scenery.

You can sit by the lake, listen to the small waves, hear the birds, and simply enjoy the quiet surroundings—and that’s exactly the luxury.
Activities from the Private Pier
The hotel has a private pier on Lake Ashi.

From there, guests can enjoy lake activities such as kayaking and motorboat cruising.
There are also seasonal activities such as SUP during warmer months.
I think an early morning or calm-weather kayaking experience on Lake Ashi would be beautiful.
The lake is quiet, the mountains are close, and the atmosphere around the hotel feels peaceful.

Dining: A Strong Reason to Visit
I have enjoyed several meals at Hakone Hotel over the years, and it has become one of my favorite restaurants in Hakone.
The food is consistently excellent, and every meal feels carefully prepared.

The elegant dining room, peaceful atmosphere, and beautiful views of Lake Ashi make it a place where I always want to take my time and enjoy the experience.
I also wrote a detailed review of the restaurant, which you can find below.

This is one reason I think the hotel is especially well suited to adults and couples.

If you stay here, I recommend booking a plan with dinner or, at the very least, enjoying breakfast while looking out over Lake Ashi.

For dinner, guests can choose between French cuisine at Il Miraggio or teppanyaki at Yamazakura, both located within the hotel’s elegant lakeside dining area.

Rooms: Elegant, Peaceful & Comfortable Lake-View Rooms
Many of the rooms feature high ceilings, large windows, and beautiful views of Lake Ashi. On clear days, some rooms also offer views of Mt. Fuji.

The hotel has a calm European-modern design, and the interiors feel elegant, peaceful, and comfortable. Large windows bring in plenty of natural light, creating a bright and relaxing atmosphere.
Rather than following a single standard design, each room type has its own furniture, colors, and layout.

Hot Springs: Nice, But Not the Main Reason to Stay
Hakone Hotel has two hot spring bath areas: Spa Ashinoko and Spa Taikan.
The baths are used on a gender-switching schedule.
Spa Ashinoko has an indoor bath and an outdoor-style bath with views of Lake Ashi and the surrounding mountains.
Spa Taikan has a bath where guests can look up toward the sky.

That said, this is not a large onsen resort.
If your main reason for visiting Hakone is to enjoy a big open-air bath, a large public bath, or many different types of baths, this hotel may feel a little limited.
But if you want a quiet lakeside hotel with a small hot spring bath as part of the stay, it should be enough.
Relaxing Spaces Beyond Your Room
That there are plenty of places to relax outside your room.
Lake View Lounge Il Lago

Guests can enjoy the welcome drink here while looking out over the garden and Lake Ashi. It’s a peaceful place to start or end the day.
Guest-Only Spaces

Hakone Hotel also has guest-only lounges and seating areas, providing quiet places to relax during your stay.
A Prime Location for Exploring Lake Ashi
One of the hotel’s biggest advantages is its location.
Hakone Hotel sits right on the shore of Lake Ashi, with a bus stop just outside the entrance, making it easy to explore the area without a car.

Several of the area’s most popular attractions—including Hakone Checkpoint, Onshi Hakone Park, and Narukawa Art Museum—are all within walking distance.
This makes the hotel an excellent base for sightseeing, especially if it’s your first visit to the Lake Ashi area.
Despite its convenient location, the hotel itself feels remarkably peaceful. Once you step into the hotel, it’s easy to forget the busy sightseeing area just outside.
