Tenseien Review: A Hot Spring Resort Packed with Attractions in Hakone

Tenseien(天成園) is one of the most popular onsen resorts in Hakone, featuring large hot spring facilities, scenic garden grounds, waterfalls, a shrine, and a variety of attractions that make it feel more like a resort than a traditional ryokan.

I visited as a day-use guest and quickly understood why so many travelers choose to stay here.

In this review, I’ll take a closer look at the rooms, dining, hot springs, and who I think Tenseien is best suited for.

Guest Rooms

I wasn’t able to see inside the guest rooms during my visit.

However, after looking through the room options on Tenseien’s official website, it is clear that the property offers a wide variety of accommodations, ranging from standard Japanese-style rooms to spacious suites with private open-air baths.

One room type that particularly caught my attention was the Japanese-style room with a private open-air bath.

What makes these rooms especially appealing is that the baths use free-flowing natural hot spring water.

The idea of soaking in your own private onsen while looking out toward the surrounding mountains feels like a truly luxurious way to experience Hakone.

For travelers celebrating a special occasion or simply wanting extra privacy, these rooms would likely be among the most attractive options at Tenseien.

If you’re interested in staying in one of Tenseien’s private open-air bath rooms, it’s worth checking availability in advance, especially during weekends and holiday periods.

Dining at Tenseien

The resort features a large buffet restaurant that serves both breakfast and dinner for guests staying on meal-inclusive plans.

Although I wasn’t able to dine there myself, the restaurant is one of Tenseien’s most talked-about facilities.

According to the hotel, dinner includes live cooking stations where chefs prepare dishes directly in front of guests.

Popular items include:

  • Fresh sushi
  • Tempura
  • Teppanyaki
  • Seasonal Japanese dishes
  • Desserts

The buffet style allows guests to sample a wide variety of foods rather than committing to a traditional fixed-course kaiseki meal.

This makes Tenseien especially appealing to families and groups with different tastes.

Breakfast

Breakfast is also served buffet style.

Many guests mention the seafood rice bowl station, where visitors can create their own seafood donburi topped with ingredients such as salmon roe and fresh seafood.

Other popular choices include:

  • French toast
  • Pancakes
  • Freshly baked bread
  • Japanese breakfast dishes

Many guests choose Tenseien specifically for its combination of hot springs and buffet dining.

Beyond the Baths: Waterfalls, Gardens, and a Shrine

The baths use genuine Hakone Yumoto hot spring water and offer a variety of indoor and outdoor bathing options.

Beyond the hot springs, I also enjoyed exploring the garden grounds, which feature waterfalls, ponds, and a small shrine.

Together, the baths, gardens, and relaxation areas make Tenseien feel more like a resort where you can spend several hours at your own pace.

If you’d like a closer look at the baths and facilities, I cover them in detail in my separate day-use review.

Who Should Stay at Tenseien?

After spending several hours at Tenseien, I can easily understand why it receives such consistently positive reviews from guests.

I think Tenseien is an excellent choice for:

  • Families with children
  • Couples looking for a relaxed getaway
  • Groups of friends traveling together
  • Travelers who enjoy buffet dining
  • Visitors looking for a resort-style onsen experience

Even as a solo visitor, I had a great time exploring the property at my own pace.

At the same time, I couldn’t help thinking that Tenseien would be even more enjoyable with family or friends, thanks to its wide range of facilities and activities.
