Overview
I first visited Hotel de Yama(山のホテル) after a friend recommended its café, and it quickly became one of my favorite places in Hakone.
The hotel is best known for its beautiful azalea gardens, which attract many visitors in May when the flowers are in full bloom.
But what I love most is the atmosphere. No matter when I visit, it feels quiet, classic, and a little removed from the busy tourist areas of Hakone.
One of the highlights of Hotel de Yama is the opportunity to enjoy a meal while overlooking Lake Ashi. The beautiful setting adds something special to the experience.
Lunch with Lake Ashi Views
Hotel de Yama has both a French restaurant and a Japanese restaurant. On this visit, I chose the Japanese restaurant, Tsutsuji no Chaya.
From my window-side seat, I could look out over Lake Ashi and watch the sightseeing boats pass by.
I ordered the Kazahana Gozen (¥3,500), which included soba, sushi, tempura, and seasonal kaiseki-style dishes, all carefully prepared and beautifully presented.
Sitting by the window and enjoying this beautifully presented meal with views of Lake Ashi felt like a small luxury in the middle of the day.
The meal also included dessert and hojicha tea, making it excellent value for the price.
What made the experience even more memorable was the setting.
The restaurant itself is spacious and elegant, with a calm atmosphere that perfectly matches the classic character of Hotel de Yama.
Exploring the Gardens
After lunch, I spent some time exploring the gardens.
The grounds are surprisingly large and are one of the highlights of Hotel de Yama.
The gardens are best known for their spectacular azaleas in May, when thousands of flowers bloom across the property.
During my visit, the hydrangeas were beginning to bloom, adding color to several areas of the garden.
I also enjoyed walking through the rose garden, which felt almost European in atmosphere. There is even a small chapel on the grounds, along with several charming wooden sculptures hidden among the trees.
What impressed me most was the peaceful atmosphere. Even though Hakone Shrine is just nearby and often crowded with visitors, the gardens felt quiet and calm.
I left feeling refreshed after another enjoyable visit to Hotel de Yama.
Staying Overnight?
Hotel de Yama is worth visiting for lunch and the gardens alone, but staying overnight offers a chance to enjoy the property at a slower pace.
