Hotel de Yama is one of Hakone’s most iconic hotels.
Overlooking Lake Ashi, the property combines beautiful gardens, elegant dining, and a classic atmosphere that feels different from many modern resorts.
With a history dating back to 1948, the hotel still retains a sense of elegance and refinement today.
Few hotels in Hakone combine history, gardens, lake views, and hospitality as naturally as Hotel de Yama.

A Walk Through the Hotel
Next to the lobby is a spacious café lounge with high ceilings, a grand piano, and large windows overlooking the gardens.

The design feels classic without feeling old-fashioned. In winter, the fireplace is lit, creating an even more inviting atmosphere.
I also enjoyed stepping out onto the terrace, where I could take in views of the gardens and the surrounding mountains while enjoying the fresh Hakone air.

Even the elevator hall felt special. A vintage telephone connected directly to the front desk adds a small but memorable touch that perfectly matches the hotel’s classic style.

Unfortunately, the guest room floors are accessible only to overnight guests, so I couldn’t explore beyond this point.
Instead, I’ll briefly introduce the room types using photos from the official Hotel de Yama website.
Rooms
Guest rooms throughout the hotel are designed to make the most of the surrounding scenery, with views of the gardens, Lake Ashi, and the mountains of Hakone.

I would love to spend a few days here, enjoying the scenery and the classic atmosphere that make Hotel de Yama so unique.

Hot Springs
Based on the official photos, the hot spring area looks particularly inviting.
Surrounded by trees, the open-air bath appears to offer a peaceful retreat in the heart of Hakone.

Rather than feeling like a traditional ryokan bath, the design appears elegant and understated, reflecting the hotel’s long history and distinctive character.

Gardens & Dining
For a closer look at the gardens and dining experience, I’d recommend starting with my full review below.

The spacious grounds change with the seasons, from the famous azaleas in spring to autumn leaves later in the year.
During my visit, hydrangeas were blooming in parts of the garden. The fresh scent of greenery after the rain, the views of Lake Ashi, and the quiet atmosphere made it a wonderful place for a leisurely walk.
Dining is equally memorable.
The restaurants make the most of the hotel’s lakeside location, allowing guests to enjoy beautiful views of Lake Ashi while dining.
The combination of excellent food, elegant surroundings, and a relaxed atmosphere makes every meal feel special.
